War Scars
The mental war rages on
He’s got scars all over his legs because he used to “draw” on himself.
She keeps telling him that he’s amazing the way he is. He reads it over 100 times, but he still doesn’t fully believe it. She tells him that his past will never define him. She says he’s stronger now and he won’t fall into that pitch black hole again. He tells her how much he loves her, hoping that can make up for all his baggage. He promises he’ll be here for her as long as he’s alive, but sometimes he isn’t sure how long that’ll be.
When her name pops up, he instantly smiles. Then night falls and turns into the silent hours. That’s when his mind tells him that she’ll leave when she finds out how bad it is. He doesn’t have scars on his arm because that’s the first place teachers look- the first place counselors look. They think that’s the only place a blade can brush across.
Kids are smart, but teachers don’t think that unless there’s a fat A and a smiley face on the paper.
