Reading Like A Writer

My eyes glide across Kathryn Stockett’s book, The Help.

This is the second time I’m reading through this amazing book, and I’ve just realized that it’s in present tense.

I mean– I knew it was in present tense, but I found myself looking at the verbs. I’m currently in Shaunta Grimes 31 day writing challenge for May, and day two’s assignment was to read like a writer. I’m also working on my own fiction project named Anomaly, which is about a transgender teen fighting his way to a spot on his high school basketball team in a conservative school system. It’s also in present tense. If you want to check out the first chapter, I’ll provide a link.

The Help is set in Jackson, Mississipi in 1962 where there’s separate bathrooms as well as grocery stores.
