My Characters Carry Pieces of Me

Don’t you see?

No father, but close with my mother
Struggle is nothing new to me
Father couldn’t read
Discovering that brought out the best in me
My relentless desire to learn
My insatiable hunger for books

Lost my mother young
She lives in my heart now
Taught me how to love
Without limits
Taught me to never stop giving
Taught me to smile through the pain
Life will never be the same
Without her smile
Without her beautiful singing voice
Without her super powers
To make me laugh even on the worst day
To make all my sickness melt away
To make me study even when I didn’t want to
Everything she taught me —
I hope it shines through

Mother had to leave us
But she left me with my grammy
With a will to kick life’s ass
As many times as she can
She shows me how
To get back up
To throw a jab back
Even a haymaker every now and again
How to smile when anger is
