Last Time I Checked

A poem

Last time I checked
We wrecked
Chasing perfect
Not paying attention to the cause and effect
Of our actions
Too focused on the satisfaction–
The perfect distraction

Last time I checked
You left
Me
I was the one box left unchecked

What a mess we made
Feel so played
Tried to one–hand–catch your heart like OBJ
Tried to get you to stay
But you said my baggage weighed
Too much
Holding onto our memories with bloody fingers
Just so they won’t fade

Why’d you bother me
When you didn’t want this?
Had me trapped in a field of ignorant bliss
It caught fire quicker than a blitz
My heart still gets fits
When I think about it

Our once love galore
Affair
Turned into a chore
Left us wanting more
Now we’re shouting useless threats like the Cold War
You used to be more open than French doors
And I could always reach you like the first floor

Last time
I checked
We were partners in crime
Now our love has been murdered
And we’re both suspects

This poem started out being inspired by SZA’s Love Galore. As I kept writing it kind of formed it’s own narrative, which is way different than the one in the song. I hope you enjoy it! ❤
