Keeping Score
Ending May on a strong note
40,077 is my final count for the month of May. Tomorrow starts a new month. My “score” will be reset to zero, and it’ll be time for me to do it all over again.
Keeping a log of how much I’ve written each day reminds me that I am doing something. Sometimes when we first start out and our expectations are crushed by reality, it can feel like we aren’t doing enough.
May started with the first chapter of Anomaly. It published on May 1st.
I talked about how Anomaly started out in the piece below.
I’ve had so much fun and frustration writing this series. It’s nowhere near over, so there’s plenty more to come. Recently someone told me it was becoming their favorite series on Medium. I read that response and wanted to write five more chapters in one sitting. I didn’t though, of course. Out of my 40,077 words for the month, Anomaly makes up for 12,887 of them.
I started consistently writing on Medium in April, so May was more of a “Let’s keep this going” thing. Overall, I’ve posted 46 pieces. 7 were Anomaly chapters, 17 were poems, and the other 28 were nonfiction pieces this month.
For someone who had no idea what they wanted to do after high school, floated through community college, and finished a semester at university — this is probably the most consistent thing I’ve done. I showed up to write (almost) every day. However, even if I didn’t write a full piece or publish, I still at least wrote a poem or something on my phone. I type stuff when I can’t sleep. That probably doesn’t help my sleep struggles, but it keeps my mind from drowning in a well of over–thinking.
I also scored a paid writing internship that starts in June. I’m terrified, but excited at the same time. This is the first time I’ll actually get paid to write something besides posting locked articles here. It’ll be an experience I hope to learn a lot from. I’ll write more about it after it kicks off, so be on the look out for that.
I didn’t want this to be long, so I’ll stop it right here. I look forward to more writing and publishing as we welcome June. I appreciate everyone that’s taken the time to read my writing. I hope you stick around for more. ❤
