I graduated high school a year before my best friend. Then when she graduated, she went to a college about 2 hours away from me. Every day for a little over two years, I’d write a send her either a long message or a poem about how special she was and/or how much she meant to me. We couldn’t be there for each other physically, but we made time for each other whenever we could. We’ve been close for almost four years.
I’ve helped her with homework in a Google Doc with both of us working together. She’s helped me through anxiety attacks and depression episodes. Now I’m sending her pictures and videos of my newborn puppies. I still spam her with cute food pun cartoons that say something like “I love you smore every day” or “you’re one in a melon”
We probably wouldn’t still be friends if it wasn’t for technology. We wouldn’t have had a way to consistently communicate.
People love to point out the negative. They forget that technology helps parents stay in touch with their kids in college or the military or moved to a new city for a job. They forget about how social media spreads the word and gets people help like donating bottled water to Flint or Go Fund Me pages that help raise money for someone’s medical care. Technology is all about what you choose to do with it.
Great piece!
