How Starbucks Continues to Support the LGBTQ Community
Starbucks gives transgender people a huge win with its health insurance expansion.
Starbucks’ new health insurance covers even more gender reaffirming surgeries than it used to as of Monday, June 25.
Bottom surgery has been covered by the coffee brand’s insurance since 2012. Now top surgery, hair transplants, and facial feminization procedures are also covered.
Many transgender individuals have to jump through countless hoops just to convince their insurance to cover their procedures. Some opt to save up until they can afford to pay for it themselves. People set up Go Fund Me pages and sell creations on Etsy to help gather thousands of dollars.
Last year, the president and vice president of Starbucks reached out to the World Professional Association for Transgender Health for a consultation. They wanted to make sure they had all the necessary information to provide inclusive coverage.
This isn’t the first time Starbucks has shown genuine support for the LGBT community. Gender neutral bathrooms were incorporated in their Washington D.C stores in 2010. A year later, Starbucks wasted no time voicing its disapproval of the Defense of Marriage Act of 2011. The LGBT community has too many adversaries to list, and it seems like the list grows longer each day. To know that a big company like Starbucks supports the LGBT community is refreshing to say the least.
